The fan is rotating with 2000 rpm! I don't want this blade close to my head while filming!
And sadly the design is not open source, they sell licenses....

Sounds good, do you have a website of the Vienna car partner?
I also don't like the connection to guns but the coating seems to be very sturdy and resistant and they offer a lot of colors too.
There are two cerakote partners in Vienna (and one is related to cars and not guns :-) ) maybe we can take a look....
If we call the baby with the full name "Apertus Axiom Beta" the version name should be as short as possible. Shortest would be one character and we can build 26 versions. Subversions could be A1, A2....
And we still can give them alphabetical nicknames.
The name on the identification label (with serial number) should be short and straight...
Movies title don't credit an individual but a project, and they are spread in popular culture, we just need to check if there are legal issues for some.
So far, in the category one word, short classics titles:

Perfect ideas! Short titles are perhaps best.
Or terms from classic movies. For example: Rosebud in steed of Citizen Kane.
Shining, Beauty and the Beast, Citizen Kane, King Kong, Vertigo, ET, Metropolis ...http://www.rottentomatoes.com/top/bestofrt/top_100_classics_movies/?category=5
The website lets you order free "swatches", maybe we should check it out?
That they are primarily using them for coating guns tells me two things: a) they must be expensive b) I dont want us to be associated with them...
JJMM would mean we are limited to releasing one camera model per month which could become a problem when we iterate quickly. Also the scheme is not self explanatory by itself...
thats true, probably not ideal for a camera.
The first thing which comes to my mind with the "heat sink fan" is precession.
I also think we should not refer to one gender, even if the names can be pretty. lets go for latin digits and films or/and directors or/and actresses and actors... that way it give us flexibility, while staying in one topic that make sense for apertus : open source cinema.
I'd really not do women names. It could sound sexist. It reminds me of car fanatics that say 'she' and the 'girl' about their car. It sounds too 'Atomos-isch' to me ;)
Why not stick to only latin (I II III IV V VI etc) ?
What do you think about naming it like JJMM e.g. 1505
An we could add names like Ubuntu too: 1505 AngryAbigail, 1507 BeautyBelinda
In my opinion numbers are easier to associate with versions then names. ( I just remember JJMM of Ubuntu and not the names...)
@Bertl: thanks for your answer
@sebastian: thanks for the poll, i think it's the best way to estimate the community needs.

ducted fan actually have better performance for airflow and noise reduction. To get better result concerning noise We could connect the fan to the case through a neoprene surface (which is also weatherproof and breathable).
here is a link for a silent dust immune heat sink fan. the cooling effect is radial though, and not perpendicular to the fan.

A caseless version should be nice to have too, because some people (me at least) would want to custom build their own....
I will set up a poll in the lab to evaluate how many people would be interested in acquiring this additional 90° interface board in the future.
We got the 90 degree question at NAB, from somebody who was interested in using a lot of the Betas side by side.

let's vote for a 'cat on our shoulder'!
(make the beta cam upright, rotate the sensor by 90°)

Welcome back Sebastian!
here is a new minimal case in progress with 2mm sheets for the sides and around 4mm for the top and bottom plate.
And no "caps" over the fan yet. the top plate allows to screw the fan from the bottom, if we mill a pocket to place it inside from below.
Good to see progress and a downgrading of the shaver potential!

I am back! :)

Keep in mind that anything that looks like a turbine or a fan is very noisy... like planes
maybe we can think of some kind of ducted turbine on top of the fan to accelerate airflow, like on a plane... just an idea.

Christoph, as you can see it, the ninja fits just right in this scheme.
Apr 11 2015
does the Atomos Ninja Star (95 x 60 x 25mm) fit inside the case? would be interesting to have a recorder on board :)

interesting reference concerning cooling, and airflow, especially 5.high efficiency heat sink and cooling fan. its for astronomers, reaching for the stars! http://www.centralds.net/cam/?product=cds-5dmarkiiicooled-eos-5d-markiii

I believe it is a pending issue. From what I understand there is a fan on top, and some holes at the bottom, in order to create airflow.
I don't understand how the air flow is supposed to be.
Thanks! I left out the IO highspeed module on this one.
In this one https://lab.apertus.org/T401 we have the same PCB design (V02 03)
i like it!
it would be cool to see how the cable slot (I/O module) look like. .. :)
did you draw it according to that PCB design?
it's on the wiki
Here is a sketch for the latest PCB stack version including the high speed IO module inside the case (no connectors yet).
maybe we can use the inner surface of the aluminium case to do some cooling (heatsync).
What about aluminium core PCBs?

Yes, bending could be a bit trickier. But if we have the right machine, i could also be not so tricky. Since the main goal was the ergonomics, and it might be too small, we can leave it out. I took my canon 600D as a ref for the handle, since it has a nice grip. Im still a bit curious as of how it feels, i might print just the handle part of it.
Great progress!
Hi! Interesting handles. I can imagine there is a good grip!

I'm working in vfx industry and i'm waiting this feature with great excitation, i hope this will be used by the blender tracker as basis for 3d tracking (optical could be just used for tracking enhancement) because optical tracking alone doesn't work any time (during fast motion for example). This could be used to automatically detect element that move in the shot and separate them from the camera motion.
May be realtime optical camera tracking could be done by moving optical search zone of tracking points at his estimated position based on IMU measurement???
This could be a killer apps...

There are aluminium cooling profiles out there. We should find a fitting profile to reduce production costs. Let's search...

i found another bug in the F-mount to CMV12k-V05.ipt
basicly everything that is marked lightblue needs to be moved on the x axis because the mount is not perfectly centered on the sensor when assembled.
see here: https://eveninfinite.com/downloads/axiom/f-mount/f-mount_correction.png and here https://eveninfinite.com/downloads/axiom/f-mount/f-mount_wrong.png

Making summaries of an ongoing process is indeed difficult, some aspects might be more certain than others already but that can change quickly if there is someone who really pushes for/against a certain aspect. We will try to go more indepth with some things related to the ongoing AXIOM Beta development in the next team talk but keeping a website page or overview text up to date at all times is an impossible sisyphus task I am afraid :)
I see... another question answered more or less somewhere else....
even i had a look in other tasks, i didn´t stumble over it, sorry.
so this is what i mean with a summary about the AXIOM Beta and the Remote.
a kind of overview page where it is more easy to find the current state of development decisions.
but i guess its to early for that and i better look into all tasks.
or maybe the "task descriptions" should be more compact and expressive in order to be better viewable...
haha, here comes masta muk with the solutions ;-)
at the same time i know its hard to get a structure into an open project where everybody can drop tasks.
i have to say thank you guys at this point for all your effort!
and i would be happy to help to get the live image out of Axiom Alpha T222, but i guess my programming skills are to low level for that issue...
but i guess it is possible to get the live image via Wifi into an app?
If T222 gets implemented yes.
Feb 16 2015
Thx for the answer, Sebastian! Actually this information is in the planned features more or less. - sorry for that question.
AXIOM Remote no live video - ok, but i guess it is possible to get the live image via Wifi into an app?
Maybe it would help to have a summary of hardware, software, interface and features that are decided facts. Or does it exist and i just didn´t find it?
AXIOM Remote is wired at first.

So I watched the team video & someone poised the question about cooling, if I recall correctly it seemed as though what Sebastian proposed was putting a cooling fan inside of the camera?
Feb 9 2015
as colinelves and philippej mentioned a solid box would be better. you can count me in a solid box cost some bucks more but to the volume you get some discount and anyway you need a case to carry your camera.

I am open to any options that work toward a clear design goal. News / in-field documentary work would come with unique and possibly counter axis design goals when considering a cinema camera, for example. Alexa versus Amira come to mind.
Jan 22 2015
I like the idea of the Beta shipping in some sort of foam that can be reused in a case. You could, perhaps, offer backers the option of paying a bit extra to get a solid case rather than a cardboard box.
Jan 21 2015
My laptop came from service packed like this:
I think the price would be in a similar area, pactec though does not offer this cardboard solid form pressing service.
I would test this, since it's not so stiff on the edges.
But the cardboard is stiff and provides no protection to the camera...
Like this :
What do you mean with "standard piece"?
Agreed on providing the two boxes options.
Interesting idea! I am a bit concerned about protection as the towel would need to fill out the entire packaging box otherwise it will together with the camera be thrown around inside the package when it travels the world. Also we will have a few more accessories in the package that could scratch each other... Also it might look weird when you open the package and there is everything piles together in a towel inside :)
pactec has nice things! So what we should find out or decide is what we should use.
Cheap and single use or a more expensive case.
Jan 20 2015
i think it's a good idea so summarize all your user-scenarios to know what kind of connectors and gadgets we want to use with the beta in the 'cupboard' - rig.
In T98#3851, @colinelves wrote:Not exactly true regarding the XLRSs
Not exactly true regarding the XLRSs - even running dual system sound you may want to use the onboard recording for a scratch track via either an on board mic or a radio mic to help with syncing in post. It's also a useful idea if the camera cannot accept Timecode in as you can use an Audi track to record LTO Timecode.
Met a very nice representative from pactec.at

I presume differences in the two potentials (i.e. insufficient grounding).
Jan 11 2015
Was the problem the lacking grounding of the HDMI connector metal then or why did the Alpha reboot when a cable was plugged in?
Jan 10 2015
Well, actually the ZedBoard has proper ESD protection on the HDMI port (D12,D13, and D14).

Or in the other direction of a throw away solution we could shred old newspaper, mix it with water and build our own papier mâché press that just pushes the material into a CNC milled mold form and squeezes the water out. Leave it a day to dry and we have a 100% paper packaging form that can be recycled again.
