we could be more inovative and provide something that can be used also for longer term transportation. Using a standard (simple) box and some foam pads to protect, ship, and transport the tools.

- vacuum forming with (biocompatible) foil. Video
Polystyren is not eco friendly. Might be interesting to dig the recycled paper solutions?

Thanks, we will keep that in mind :)
90 degree connectors would help, as would rotating the IO shield so the ports are at the top rather than the side.
Cables side-mounted:
since the sony f55 have the xlr's on the side(90º), i totally understand that this is a bad idea :)
On the subject of powder coating or wrinkle coating, it might surprise you the number of times I have encountered cheesplates or like threaded elements that have been coated without consideration to the tolerances of the bolt. This often ends up with a need to re-tap the freshly coated objects such that a bolt can be accommodated.
I can see a cabling nightmare here. Cables jutting out the previs images, camera left or camera right, is going to almost always be a sub-optimal decision.

No, they're not - at least not at the moment (I wouldn't put it past Black Magic to release the firmware of the black magic cameras). But they are both incredibly cheap - and I doubt there is much that can be done to the Beta to make it cheaper, except what is already on offer (ie a cheaper sensor).
Those are great cameras but they are not open source / customizable.
The main problem with this suggestion is that there is already two very good 'low cost' cameras in the market:

Even for those that can afford the full camera, an "expendable" solution makes sense. A case that survives in most cases, for the time when risking the main rig becomes too much of a gamble. Bonus for making it light.
True. We should make a list of protected features that need to remain imperial because it would break compatibility otherwise. Something like

I am a hobby photographer with a quite good (and expansive) equipment. I hardly do filmmaking, but I thought of a great chance when I found your crowd funding campaign. :-)
How many Nikon lenses do you regularly use for filmmaking that only have electronic aperture control?
@HAL-1999: I'm all for keeping things metric, but in the case of 1/4", 3/8" mount standards you've got to think of those as universally recognized names, not imperial units. The 1/4" 20 UNC mount standard uses a 0.635cm wide hole, yes, but that does not mean we can simply call it the 0.635cm UNC mount standard.. Replace <1/4"> and <3/8"> with <smallhole> and <bighole> in this thread and you'll find we're sticking with metric for all our measurements.

With aluminium case it is possible to design fins on the outside of the case which passive cooling may be adequate. In the video I heard that the heat dissipation of the sensor is around 3W. This is trivially small but the rest of the electronics need to be considered.
Is anybody else bothered by the horrible mixture of metric and imperial dimensions in that document?

Indeed, in addition to having image stabilization, having data for camera tracking sounds awesome; huge!

The "shoestring" version could have a sturdy but very light plastic case - for lightweight applications such as quadcopters or cheap motorized gimbals.

Yes of course.
Once you have more detailed information I would be glad to help implements/discuss concrete design.

Hi Benoit Callebaut
Personally I like the idea of a single button upgrade from an SD card. But like Philippe said I don't like the idea of writing 300MB to update 64 kb. Moreover, a "single button push" upgrade can be dangerous. I don't want to upgrade my camera by mistake.
But connecting it through USB to my PC and using a program to do the update is something I prefer. Like that I know that i cannot use the camera during the upgrade and I won't do any mistake (or at least less), I don't need that the camera is running to give be information about the upgrade being made.
Hope its going to be a full weather sealed body!!

any comments on that cage?
Another huge wish for the future: an entry level model with a cheaper sensor and a lower price tag.
Your suggestion is a new idea/wish and would deserve its own lab task! I am very curious to learn how many folks would be interested in cheaper entry level option.
That's great to hear! Another huge wish for the future: an entry level model with a cheaper sensor and a lower price tag.

We are planning to put 3D magnetometer and 3D gyroscope sensors (9DOF-IMU e.g. for image stabilization) directly behind/next to the sensor. Great to see this is something people care about!

The AXIOM remote would have its own micro SD card and software image I assume.
Yes, sure, but if you want to update only the remote for example, you won't like to download a 300 mb file just to upgrade a 64kb firmware.

This question sounds like you can answer it :)
Isnt it the simplest approach to provide a single ISO image for the operating system SD card (containing FPGA bitstream as well)?

Sounds impractical to me, as both, the planned Beta Board as well as the MicroZed have connectors on the sides, so they are likely to be blocked by those backward facing receptacles.
